NOTCH IS BACK! That's right ladies and gentlemen, the former lead vocalist and one of the creative forces behind the Hip Hop/Reggae riddim machine Born Jamericans --- is ready to captivate a whole new generation with his combination of Spanish, English and Patoi (a Jamaican dialect) aka "Spatoinglish."

 

Born to a Black American mother of Portuguese, Native American and Caribbean descent and a Jamaican father of Cuban and French descent, Notch (as a solo artist) is on a journey to broaden the musical scope and connect cultures with his unique blend of genres. Notch's sound is definitely a reflection of his own eclectic multi-cultural background and his evolution as an artist. He has masterfully fused Reggae, Latin, Alternative, Reggaeton, R&B, and Pop to create several chart-topping smash hits -- you may remember "Chevere," "Verme" and "Hay Que Bueno."

Offering his works to the world and not committed to any one genre, Notch is definitely not your average artist...which was evident in his official digital singles release party at the world famous Copacabana on November 15th. 

His performance was awesome! He definitely had the crowd rocking to not only his new music, but his older hits as well. Notch is not only a great artist...but he's a wonderful person as well. He even took the time out to spend with fans in the VIP section and chatted it up with us about Urban Latino (he even gave us some props on all our hard work!).

Hey Guys,

This post is dedicated to a legendary man, a man who not only has an enormous amount of talent but also a heart full of love and positive energy...the one and only Eddie Palmieri! Ahhhh yes, this NINE time Grammy Award winner is our client. We are so honored to work with this musical icon.


We went to DC, on Sunday, June 12th to see Mr. Palmieri receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the DC Jazz Festival! He was actually the FIRST LATINO to be honored with this award (saxophonist Jimmy Heath was also a recipient that day). Shortly after Mr. Palmieri did what he does best...he played at the National Mall with his 11-piece All-Star Orchestra. What a performance it was! He had  everyone dancing...definitely giving the DCJF some spice ;)

And get this...Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor showed up to support! I actually had the privilege to shake her hand, formerly introduce myself andddd walked her to the VIP tent :) (you, stealing a scene with the Justice #winning). Unfortunately, we couldn't take a picture with her due to all these rules...but there is a mini clip of me shaking her hand :)...The Justice was actually sitting behind us throughout the whole performance! El Maestro described her attendance as "the biggest honor of my entire career!" He even dedicated his first song, "Muneca" to her! What a sweet moment!


After the performance we went back to the hotel, hung out with our LS (linesister) Arlene, who actually has a cool blog as well (APMcGheeReact.blogspot.com). Then we linked back up with the crew/band for some cocktails! Some of the band members were telling us about the night before in LA for the Playboy Jazz Festival, where Bill Cosby, Jamie Fox and Christina Millian were in attendance!


The next day was the press conference, It didn't go as well as planned but we got great footage of Eddie talking about an issue that's affecting todays musicians. The elimination of 31 categories, for the 54th annual Grammy Awards. One of the categories is Latin Jazz. This has raised many eyebrows and disappointed numerous musicians, especially former recipients/nominees. The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) announced the cut of categories earlier this year. This decision caused protests nationally and internationally. Latin Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Cajun, Zydeco, Hawaiian, Polka, Traditional World and certain Gospel, Blues, R&B, and Mexican categories, among others have all been unceremoniously terminated (so sad). Eddie Palmieri being the originator of Latin Jazz, took this to heart. He and other artists are trying to make a change. Log on to Grammy Watch to be part of the petition to save todays music! Eddie is actually spearheading this petition to reinstate the Latin Jazz category. Its not right to have all these forms of Jazz in just one category. They all have such distinctive sounds that the originators worked so hard to create. If you feel that this is wrong, state your comments here or go to Grammy Watch...and speak up!

What's Up!

As mentioned earlier this week, we were in Washington, DC for 2 day (Sunday-Monday) working with one of our clients, Eddie Palmieri.

So for those of you who have no idea who I'm talking about, shame shame on you...prepared to be schooled. 

Eddie Palmieri is legendary...in every sense of the word.  Mr. Palmieri is a one of the most renowned Latin Jazz pianists of our time. His charismatic power and bold, innovative drive as a composer/arranger, pianist and bandleader has led him on a distinctive musical career that spans over 50 years...and he hasn't stop yet!  With a discography that includes 36 recordings, Palmieri has received nine Grammy Awards.  His first was in 1975, for The Sun of Latin Music, which is widely considered the the most historic, as it was the first time Latin music was recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS). 

Mr. Palmieri was born in Spanish Harlem in 1936.  He, along with his older brother, late Salsa legend and pianist Charlie Palmieri, began studying piano at an early age. His professional career kicked off in the early '50s with Eddie Forrester's Orchestra.  From there he joined Johnny Segui's band and also spent time with the Tito Rodriguez Orchestra before forming his own band, the celebrated La Perfecta, in 1961. 


La Perfecta was unique in that it featured a trombone section in place of trumpets, something that has been rarely done in Latin music. With his Eddie Palmieri and La Perfecta's infectious sound, he soon joined ranks with the esteemed Machito, Tito Rodriguez and other major Latin orchestras...but his unconventional style is what set him part in the 1970 release of Harlem River Drive. This recording was a first, in that it fused black and Latin styles (and musicians), resulting in a free-form sound that encompassed elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz.


Still no clue?...Then I'm sure you've heard of a song called "Vamanos Pa'l Monte." (Yea, that's him!!)

So we headed down to Washington DC to accompany Mr. Eddie Palmieri and his orchestra for their performance at the DC Jazz Festival. The DC Jazz Festival is a soaring 13-day celebration of Jazz...providing dazzling arrays of performances, while presenting a virtual kaleidoscope of styles. The DCJF each year presents Lifetime Achievement Awards to jazz greats in recognition of their vast, enduring contributions to jazz and humanity.  This year, joining the ranks of illustrious artists, was the brilliant saxophonist Jimmy Heath and none other than the celebrated Eddie Palmieri! It was wonderful to see there incomparable artists be honored for representing the rich tradition of jazz and for their serve as model ambassadors for jazz music around the word.

Then it was performance time! The Eddie Palmieri All-Star Salsa Orchestra had everyone on their feet!! It was a great time! Shoutout to this orchestra: Herman Olivera (lead vocalist), Nelson Gonzalez (tres, guitar, coro), Brian Lynch (trumpet), Conrad Herwig (trombone), Jimmy Bosch (trombone), Karen Joseph (flute), Jose Claussell (timbales), Vincent "Little Johnny" Rivero (congas), Luques Curtis (bass), Orlando Vega (bongos) and Joseph Gonzalez (coro).

The following day, we were present with Eddie Palmieri while he went through a round of interviews discussing the DCJF Lifestime Achievement Award and the current NARAS situation.  

Following the interviews, we sadly packed up and headed back home. We definitely had a great time though and are truly looking forward to continue our work with Eddie Palmieri.

So Jess and I were part of entertainment history! On Tuesday, March 1, 2011 Johnnie Walker Black Label announced its unique partnership with media personality ALEX SENSATION! The event took place at Latin Quarters, New York City. Jess and I were super excited to work this exclusive event and witness this Latino history!  We were very honored that he took the time chat with us in the VIP area…he even showed Scene Stealers some love (check out the drop)!  Amongst the crowd,  was one of my other fave personalities L.Boogs from MTVtr3s /Hot 97. It’s good to see Latinos supporting one another!

Not only will Alex Sensation be featured in Johnnie Walker’s latest outdoor advertising campaign, but will also provide the voice for Johnnie Walker Black Label’s radio spots and most importantly host a series of exclusive VIP events in the tri-state area for his preferred brand of scotch whisky! With this endorsement deal he will be doing a lot more television…and not to mention extra $$$$$ in his bank account lol

Here is a little bit about his papi ;)

• He is New York City’s top Latin DJ! Alex Sensation
• He was born in Bogota, Colombia!
• He works for the Hispanic radio station with the highest ratings, La Mega 97.9 FM. (You can listen to him Monday through Friday 11AM – 3PM and Saturdays 8PM – 12 AM.)

Alex has always determined to succeed!  He started out at the Copacabana, where he was by a programming director for Amor93.1 FM. They offered him a job as a mixer, which Alex took and he remained at the station for about a year and a half until it renamed itself to Latino Mix. Six months after that switch, he was offered a job as the main mixer of a segment called “La Mega Mezcla del Mediodía” on La Mega 97.9 FM, where he remains today.

Alex is a person who has stayed true to who he is and has made sure to give back to the community. He is heavily involved various charities. He also participates every year in the Puerto Rican and Dominican Parades, as well as Colombian festivals. He has also taken his talent to countries such as Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Canada, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay and Aruba.

I can’t wait to see how this event turns out. One thing I realized about this industry which is always stay true…like Alex told us, “Stay Humble!”

So the past few weeks we've been busily preparing for a huge event, that  was hugely successful!! Urban Lifestyle Media helped executed Johnnie Walker's Conquista La Noche event at LQ's on Tuesday, March 1st.

This event was historic. Johnnie Walker coordinated this event to celebrate a very special announcement involving Colombian DJ, Alex Sensation from La Mega 97.9FM. Johnnie Walker names Alex Sensation the first Latino spokesperson for the Black Label brand in the tri-state.

Alex Sensation is definitely considered one of the most influential Latinos in the NY/NJ community, so its no wonder Johnnie Walker chose him. He's one of the most hardworking DJs out, which no doubt got him noticed by Johnnie Walker in the first place.

Besides becoming the new face of Johnnie Walker's Black Label, stay tuned to catch Alex Sensation honing his television presence. He plans on embarking on a new journey to become a television personality.

Happy Wednesday! I hope you all are having a marvelous week. I’m a little exhausted after last night … I went to this Movie Release party For Burlesque (Starring Christina Aguilera and Cher) at Kiss & Fly! I had an AMAZING TIME!!!  For a Tuesday, the ambiance was EXTREMELY ENERGETIC. It’s the current hot spot for celebrity spottings on Tuesday nights!  (Do you know that Mondays and Tuesdays are the preferred nights for stars to party? Well now you do lol). Everyone was dancing everywhere and on everything, from couches to tables -- it was pretty insane. I find their logo very creative as well!

I couldn’t stay long because I had a train to catch, but I was lucky enough to hang out behind the DJ booth!  I felt like a Hollywood socialite (hehe)! In addition, I received some advance screening passes for the movie next Monday! I’m looking forward to seeing it, especially since Christina was one of my fave pop stars back in my teenage years along with Britney Spears. But there’s a little dilemma -- I need a date! Since Jess is not so fond of my pop music taste, she doesn’t want to accompany me, any takers?  =/

Prince Royce

On Friday November, 12^th Jess and I went to see my new young bachatero crush, Prince Royce at Lehman College, thanks to Mr. Ramirez! (Jessica's Daddy) The immense crowd was screaming/shouting/crying for the artist before he even came out, and when he took the stage forget about it -- it was fanatical! He sang about 10 songs including his hits, "Stand by Me" and "Corazón Sin Cara" (LOVE THAT SONG!). His stage presence reminds me of Romeo from Aventura. He actually performed at the Grammy’s the previous night. Geoffrey Royce Rojas (his real name), was born and raised in the BX to Dominican parents. Prince Royce began singing when he was in elementary school and later began writing poetry. At the age of 15, Prince Royce wrote his first song-- And now at 21, his album went platinum and is on a road to success!! Not to mention how HUGE his following is. This kid definitely has talent and we’re thrilled we had a chance to "steal a scene" with him backstage! (You guys, he has the cutest dimple ::sigh:: ) checkout Jess' blog for more details ;)

Whats up!

We went to the Prince Royce concert this past Friday! (I know a lot of young ladies are hating...sorry lol)  The concert at the Lehman Center of Performing Arts was Royce's debut concert in the United States...I mean where better to kick it off then in his hometown, the Bronx?!  Friday night was the first of two concerts held at the center, both of which were completely sold out (BIG s/o to my Dad for getting us 4 tickets!).

Prince Royce is doing big things since his self-titled debut launched in March.  He was nominated for Best Contemporary Tropical Album at the Latin Grammys (you might have seen him performing his catchy bilingual pop-tinged bachata version of "Stand By Me" with the song's author, R&B legend, Ben E. King. this past Thursday) and has been number one on Billboard's Tropical Album charts.  His single, "Corazón Sin Cara" is hovering amid the top spots of the Tropical/Latin Song charts as well.

Prince Royce, born Geoffrey Royce Rojas was born and raised in the Bronx to Dominican parents. His experience as a performer started in grade school where he starred in various talent shows and plays. He started his career, last year, when he signed on with Top Shop Music Label, by renowned producer Sergio George (who won this year's Producer of the Year at the Latin Grammys and produced for artists like Marc Anthony and Luis Enrique), who only listened to just 3 songs off his demo!

The concert was crazy packed! There were tons of young females...and some males too lol...screaming their hearts out for Royce.  We spent the entire concert on our feet, because everyone was standing on their seats to see Royce perform.  The performance was a little over 90 minutes long and featured various songs from his self-titled debut. I only know his popular singles, "Corazón Sin Cara" and "Stand by Me," but this overall performance was enjoyable. Afterwards, Prince Royce had a special meet-n-greet with his fans that purchased VIP tickets...not only did they meet Royce, but they received a Prince Royce teddy bear, autographed CD and a Prince Royce tote bag.  Samantha and I had the opportunity to meet Prince Royce (thanks to my dad!), before all the mayhem broke lose with the VIP fans.  He even did a nice a little drop for us!

In the middle of Saturday night's performance I heard that his record label surprised Royce with a Platinum Album Award for sales exceeding 100 thousand units in the United States and Puerto Rico, as certified by the Recording Industry Association of Americas.  Pretty impressive!

All in all I had a great time with my linesisters at the concert! Can't wait to see what this week has in-store for Samantha and I!!

100 Hispanic Men Members & actor Paul Calderon

So…my boss/co-founder/publisher of ULM, Jorge Cano-Moreno was selected to be on CNN for the Kyra Phillips show. I accompanied him to the CNN studios. He did great, he discussed how Latina actresses are making strides in Hollywood and have come a long way from the stereotypical "maid" roles to Oscar award winning roles. You guys have to check it out, click here. Then from there the producers from CNN Español contacted me to get a spanish interview with him. We ended up killing two birds with one stone! Later that evening, I went to the Tiempo (ABC) studios to oversee an interview I set up with the board members of 100 Hispanic Men and actor, Paul Calderon. It will air this Sunday, October 31st at 11am. SO CHECK IT OUT!

 24horas @Premios Latinos Nomination Party

That same night, Jess and I got the chance to attend 
The Latin Awards (Los Premios Latinos) nomination party, located at Umbrella Lounge. This event was a preview to the show that will air November 5th and will broadcast to over 8 million viewers.  Los Premios Latinos is not only a spectacular show with amazing performances, but an opportunity to share the best of the best in Latin culture, music, sports, television & film. All of these leaders, entertainers, fans and many more come together to celebrate their Latino heritage and it’s positive impact on American entertainment and culture. That night they had great performances from various rising stars. My favorite performance came from 24horas! They remind me a little of Groupo Extreme, But their latest single “24 Horas” (yes, same as the group's name) is super addicting!

On Friday, October 22nd, Jess and I attended the exclusive 'invite only' rehearsal of the Machete Music Tour at MSG! It was great. This concert included, Don Omar, Ivy Queen, Tego Calderon, Cosculluela, Jowell y Randy, Flex, Angel y Kriz, and Nacho y Chino!

So guess who performed as the opening act? 24horas! (I’m telling you, they're about to explode). This tour marked the 5th year anniversary/celebration for the record label. Machete Music is currently the leader in the Latin urban music world A.K.A reggaeton. This grand concert was hosted by Alex Sensation! He definitely knew how to hype up the crowd during the breaks! I’ve been a fan of reggaeton since high school, so seeing artists like Tego and Don Omar was a very nostalgic/dream come true. It brought back fun memories, while also creating new ones! Jess and I had the pleasure of being present with other media outlets while they conducted all their interviews. We were even lucky enough to get some "drops" from artists like Jowell y Randy and Nacho y Chino - to think that “Mi Niña Bonita“ was my song of the week in my last blog ;) That goes to show anything is SERIOUSLY possible!

The concert had us on our feet, so if you do go to one of the concerts wear comfy shoes and NOT 6 inch heels (lol). I must say none of this would have been possible if wasn’t for Loren Medina from Digital Girl! (Thanks girl!)

Lastly, on Saturday, Sazon catered a makeover event for a new cosmetic line called LATINA BELLA! It took place at a Duane Reade located in Queens. They gave FREE makeovers to all the customers, while I served coffee and yummy postres (desserts) from the restaurant. The result was great! All of the lovely women were so excited and were feeling so glamorous when they were being pampered, that they eagerly purchases Latina Bella products right after.  The makeup is very affordable and compliments olive skin tones. What makes this perfect for women with our complexion is the fact that the makeup   contains “yellow” undertones as oppose to pink ones! Not to mention its super AFFORDABLE! The highest item goes for a simple $15,  which is the illuminator (I bought it, it works miracles lol). You can use it on your eyes, cheeks and even lips. It gives you that SIZZLING LATINA GLOW, without over doing it.

That's pretty much a wrap on our week! It truly makes me proud being Latina and watching us take productive roles in this society. LATINOS STAND UP!!!

Machete Music Tour 2010

Machete Music, owned by Universal Music Group, started it all and changed the Latin music landscape indefinitely by bringing reggaeton to the forefront of the industry.  While being the strongest label geared mainly around reggaeton, in recent years it has also been signing non-urban artists such as Malverde, Mala Rodriguez and Chino XL. 

On Friday, October 22nd, Machete Music kicked off their tour with the hottest stars in reggaeton and Latin urban music to perform live at the theater at Madison Square Garden, to celebrate their 5th anniversary of being the leader in Latin Urban music.

Samantha and I had the great privilege of receiving admittance to the Machete Music Tour 2010 sound check, press conference and concert. (S/O to Loren Medina of Digital Girl for the opportunity!).

We had a lot of fun watching how a concert of this magnitude all comes together.  The tour brought together artists that comprise Machete's past, present and future.  So new music, classic hits and surprise collaborations truly made this night epic. And with a lineup that included: Don Omar, Tego Calderón, Ivy Queen, Jowell y Randy, Chino y Nacho, Angel y Khriz, Cosculluela, Flex and other special guests - we definitely went into the theater expecting the unexpected.

I'm not a huge reggaeton fan, but I have to admit the concert was entertaining.

The Venezuelan duo, Chino y Nacho were awesome performing their hits "Mi Niña Bonita" and "Tu Angelito."  It was interesting to see "El Abayarde" aka Tego Calderón perform with no flashy dancers or crazy light shows - but just a mic in hand, proving that his lyrics can stand alone. "La Reina del Reggaeton" (Ivy Queen) hit the stage with an abundance of girl power! (lol)

To close out the show, making his official return to the stage in NY, Don Omar had the entire venue dancing and applauding to this classic hits and new songs.  His set alone was over 40 minutes! "The King of Kings" definitely reminded the audience why he is and will always be the most electrifying superstar in the Latin urban genre.  He performed fan-favorites such as "Dile," "Pobre Diabla," and "Salio El Sol." He even brought back out Tego Calderón for a special rendition of their collabortation "Los Bandoleros," before closing with his new hit single "Danza Kuduro."
