Behind the Scenes of Urban Latino Magazine's 100th Issue!

Video Song: "Gotta Have It" - Jay-Z & Kanye West
_________________________________________________________

DEWAR'S® Blended Scotch Whisky is proud to announce the official 100th issue release celebration for Urban Latino Magazine! On Tuesday, March 27th, 2012,  DEWAR'S - the #1 selling premium scotch in the United States - will host the exclusive soirĂ©e at Rooftop 760, situated in the heart of New York's Time Square. Celebrities, tastemakers and press will be expected for this night of celebration.

Co-founder and Publisher, Jorge Cano-Moreno felt that DEWAR'S would be the ideal fit to collaborate and celebrate this publishing milestone “They’ve used the market dollar not only to push their product but to empower the Latino community as well,” says the publisher.

The 100th cover story goes to renowned casting agent, director and producer, Ulysses Terrero. Terrero will be in the building –not only to celebrate his recognition but to host the event as well. Legendary mixtape king, Tony Touch who is known for fusing hip hop and Latin influences – will be the official MC for the night, along with other special guest DJs.

Since 1994, Urban Latino Magazine has created exposure for various important Latino figures, making ULM a platform for rising careers.  Ninety-nine covers ago, a young John Leguizamo made his debut as the first cover story for the magazine - subsequent covers featured Lauren Velez, Marc Anthony, Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson and Shakira just to name a few.  The acclaimed lifestyle and cultural publication, caters to the English-speaking Hispanic market, between the ages of 18 – 38. It was the first magazine to speak directly to this demographic, paving the way for others. The focus of Urban Latino is to capture the Latino experience in this country, viewing all sides of our story. The writers and contributors are Latinos who have lived and experienced this diverse culture. ULM continues to showcase the achievements of our community through high quality editorial and photography.

Casting agent, director and producer, “Uly” is the face of Urban Latino’s 100th issue, I met Uly on the set of the film Destination Unknown almost twenty years ago and his motivation has never slowed down. I’ve followed his career and I’ve always known nothing can slow him down and he embodies what Urban Latino is all about an idea that can become something big," says Jorge.

Just like the humble beginnings of Urban Latino Magazine, cover story Ulyssess Terrero had a long journey before he became the renowned filmmaker that he is today. The Ulyssess always had an eye for entertainment, he began his career as an extra in the movie Juice, he even tapped in to the rapping world - it wasn’t until he teamed up with his brother (Jessy Terrero) and decided to become casting directors for film projects. Terrero then went from casting to directing and producing, he has worked with international artists like Enrique Iglesias, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Nas, LL Cool J, Ciara, Sean Paul, and much more. Today he is the co-founder of Terrero Brothers Film, an innovative full service production company which produces music videos, cutting edge commercials, and documentaries for all markets. Ulyssess Terrero would like to not only push the boundaries of creativity but also nurture new young filmmakers, helping them find their voices and cultivate a unique vision.

Co-founder and Publisher, Jorge Cano-Moreno is honored to witness the longevity of the magazine and the positive affect it has in today’s society. Cano-Moreno’s credibility within this industry made him a sought after public speaker on a variety of media and entertainment topics. He’s been a guest speaker at many leading universities, such as Albany University, Boston College, University of Florida, Columbia University, and NYU’s Stern School of Business, among many others. He has participated on various panels ranging from, NAMIC (National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications), NGLC (New Generation Latino Consortium), LAMC (Latino Music Conference), the Latin Rap Conference and ASPIRA. Cano-Moreno even appeared on CNN during the Kyra Phillips show discussing Latino Trends in Hollywood in 2011. Aside from his special appearances, Jorge developed a Marketing/PR Company called, Urban Lifestyle Media, LLC. ULM, LLC provides marketing solutions to clients who seek to brand, grow and promote their brands by creating customized integrated multiplatform programs. His client list includes: NY Jets, Eddie Palmieri, Maya Films, Dewar’s, Sofrito, Sazon, Copacabana, Marvel Entertainment to name a few.

Hellllo Fashion week!

Last Wednesday night Grey Goose, the World's Best Tasting Vodka, (and Samantha's fave vodka) kicked off New York's Fashion Week in pure style by celebrating and honoring three FABULOUS women in fashion as Rising Icons. Claire Sulmers - Editor-in-Chief of the FashionBombDaily.com, Niki Schwan - celebrity stylist and VH1 style expert (She worked with Lauren Conrad from MTV's The Hills) and Kianga "Kiki" Peterson - designer of K. Milele, were all honored as Rising Icons for their work and contribution to fashion and pop culture!

As fashion shows have migrated uptown to Lincoln Center, it was only fitting that Grey Goose celebrate this occasion across the way at the Empire Hotel Rooftop for the debut of Kianga "Kiki" Peterson's new women's collection, K. Milele while DJ Amanda "Diva" Seales (a past Rising Icon honoree) added her musical flair to the night's festivities.

Models, tastemakers, fashionistas and celebrities like actress Jessica Caban, designers Idyll and Ayaan Mohallim, VH1's Big Morning Buzz host Carrie Keagan, actor/R&B recording artist Bryce Wilson, Fubu founder J. Alexander Martin, stylist Memsor Kamarake and model/actress Liris Crosse were all in attendance enjoying Grey Goose signature cocktails -  The Mogul, The Frenchy and The Cape Fizz (see recipes below ;] ).

GREY GOOSE Signature Cocktails for rising icons:

The Mogul: Grey Goose L’Orange and cranberry juice—a melodious mix of fruit flavors.

The Frenchy: Grey Goose La Poire mixed with sweet pineapple juice and tart cranberry juice creates a refreshing contrast that intrigues and delights.

The Cape Fizz: This contemporary take on a popular cocktail combines Grey Goose with cranberry juice, simple syrup and club soda.

Cheers!,

What's the fuss over SOPA...& No We Dont Mean Abuela's Sopa!

If you were surfing the web last wednesday (1/19), we're sure that you noticed many of your favorite websites (like Google's above), that you visit on a daily basis, blacked out their sites. Confused as to why?

Here's the reason: they were protesting the PIPA (PROTECT IP Act) and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bills that – if passed – would give the government and companies the power to censor the internet.

It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity." These bills also will allow for the creation of an official internet directory, where only those sites that don’t “infringe on any copyright” will be featured.

Still don't get it? This video will help:

So basically, under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

This bill would be the end of a various popular websites...it would be the end of...::gasp!:: Scene Stealers!! =(
Plus, according to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year.

Think this is bad look? You can help prevent it. Congress needs to hear from you, or this bill passes. Tell Congress not to censor the internet now!

Click here to sign the petition to stop the PIPA and SOPA bills!

Stay informed!!

xo, Jessica & Samantha

Meet Miles Morales!

The Motto (Instrumental) - Drake ft. Lil' Wayne
__________________

This post is for all you comic/super-hero lovers . . .

We are please to introduce you to...Miles Morales, the all-new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man and most talked about superhero of the century! Marvel's Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 hit shelves earlier this fall, introducing readers to Miles Morales - a 13 year old of African American and Latino descent (reppin' Puerto Rico!) from Brooklyn, New York. Like Peter Parker, Morales was bitten by a genetically-engineered spider that granted him powers. The creation of a biracial Spider-Man became an important milestone in not only comic-book history, but pop culture history as well with every major media outlet worldwide covering this announcement. Marvel believes that Miles Morales is the perfect fit to carry on the legacy of Spider-Man in the Ultimate Comics Universe; he represents diversity, in both experience and background that defines today's generation. Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, who's also of Latino descent, stated, "Miles is a character who not only follows in the tradition of relatable characters like Peter Parker, but also shows why he's a new, unique kind of Spider-Man-and worthy of that name."
The chart-topping team of Brian Michael Bendis (writer) and Sara Pichelli (artist) began this historical journey in September's Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1, giving readers a chance to learn the origin one of this important new pop culture icon. "Brian and Sara have created an important new character in Miles Morales, one that speaks not only to the diversity-in background and experience-of a modern reader, but also to what it means to be a super hero in today's world," said Alonso. The Ultimate Comics Spider-Man provides the same high-flying, wall-crawling type of adventure readers have come to love, but this time with a whole new reborn twist.
So what is this new Ultimate Comics Spider-Man capable of? Morales displays enhanced strength and agility, as well as Peter's trademark "Spider-sense", which gives him the ability to sense oncoming danger. He also has the gift to render himself invisible. His signature power is "Spider Stinger", allowing Miles to paralyze a person with the touch of his hands, and later sticking on solid surfaces. With all these new abilities he realizes that with great power comes great responsibility and even greater danger! The Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series is available today in comic shops and digitally. For more information log on to www.marvel.com.

We actually held a press junket at the Copacabana with Editor-in-Chief, Axel Alonso (check out the video for the mini-spidey-recap)!
What are your thoughts of this new super-hero (leave a comment)?

xo, Jessica & Samantha
